We offer the following staff-development workshops
Now you can bring the classic Making Algebra Child’s Play (3 – 8) workshop to your district. This workshop will inspire your teachers and show them how they can provide their young students with a strong foundation for algebra, while enhancing their mathematical self-confidence. Participants learn a proven hands-on method for solving equations with the unknown on both sides of the equal sign and for applying these methods to the solution of verbal problems. More than 50,000 educators have attended this workshop since 1990. Equations such as 4x + 3 = 3x + 9 and 2(2x + 1) = x + 14 become child’s play.
The follow-up workshop, Demystifying Verbal Problems (5 – 9) is primarily intended for teachers who have had prior experience with Hands-On Equations. Methods are shown which teachers can use to help their students solve more advanced age, consecutive number and distance problems, thereby establishing a strong algebraic foundation for success in Algebra 1.
The Developing Fractions Sense 3 & 4 workshop focuses on the Common Core Math fractions standards for grades 3 and 4. Teachers of grades 5 have also found this workshop of value. All concepts are introduced at the concrete level using fraction blocks, or pictorially using rectangular grids, before students are presented with arithmetic methods of solution. Fraction equivalence, benchmark fractions and fraction subtraction are key areas of focus in this workshop.
The Developing Fractions Sense 5 workshop focuses on the Common Core Math fractions standards for grade 5. All concepts are introduced at the concrete level using fraction blocks, or pictorially using rectangular grids, before students are presented with arithmetic methods of solution. Fraction multiplication is a key area of focus in this workshop.
The Hands-On Equations Fractions (3 – 5 gifted; 5 – 8) workshop is a half-day workshop which will enable your teachers to provide their students with a concrete introduction to fractional linear equations. Your students will learn to solve equations such as 2y – 1/2 y + 2 = y + 1/6 y + 10 using their fraction blocks and equations such as 3/4 y + y + 2 = 5/8 y + 20 abstractly. This program will strengthen your students’ understanding of unit fractions, fraction equivalence, and the algebraic principles used in solving linear equations. Hands-On Equations FRACTIONS is intended to be used with students who have completed at least Level I of the regular Hands-On Equations program.
